Off-Trail Hiking

On Cavanal Hill

Spring 2002

Couldn't Resist A Shower

Many days were spent exploring on Cavanal Mountain during the time spent in Poteau.  Very steep, rocky terrain was abundant.  Sometimes, getting back to the truck before dark was a major challenge, especially when the hikes started from the top and went down - easy to get carried away in the wild and remote playground.  Gas could be saved by coasting down the hill nearly all the way back to town.  Keeping enough momentum for the slight rises and flat stretches meant staying off the brake during the fast winding parts.  This was fun.  The time spent exploring Cavanal Hill was a blessing and a treat.   The streams weren’t as clear near the bottom...

Heading out just before sunset on a road-trip to Florida

to visit Grandmaster Jae Joon Kim while traveling in the typical "poor-boy" style.  June 2002

After driving all night, a side road was taken to pull off for some rest, just outside Jackson, Mississippi. An abandoned church conveniently presented itself as ideal spot for a picnic-breakfast and a nap in the truck.

Prior to meeting with the grandmaster, a couple of rest days were spent camping at the beach to meditate and train in preparation for the impending master-certification exam.  The serene beach was tranquil and rejuvenating - an ideal outdoor training environment that produced a lingering desire to remain there always.

After completing the essential business with Grandmaster Kim, another journey ensued to an archetypal appearance - at “The Crossroads."

According to legend, the original “crossroads” are located somewhere on the Mississippi Delta, where the blues were born.  Modern folklore places the iconic spot at the intersection of Highways 49 and 61, in Clarksdale, Mississippi...

...However, the physical location of "the crossroads” symbolically alludes to a subjective and mythical place somewhere in one’s state of soul, and the personal interlude at the mystifying “crossroads” had been pre-ordained, twenty-two years earlier, to occur in a grander fashion near the town of “Boaz,” Alabama...

...Popular and prevailing interpretations of the famous Crossroads Blues are typically shrouded in common and primitive superstition associated with the idea of a crossroads being a preferred spot for conjurations and pegan rituals.  Although such an archaic idea may be just as well founded as the significance of the cross itself, the essential theme of Crossroads Blues provides no lyrical content directly supportive of any idea other than the singer asking for “mercy” and salvation from “the lord above.”  The lyrics repeatedly refer to ideas of being isolated, forgotten, neglected, and abandoned while “sinking down” into lonely despair - a fate that could be easily befall a passionate artist who pursues fame and fortune at the expense of life’s essential virtues.  Likewise, the singer could be one who has achieved greatness while ill-prepared for the long-term consequences of the overwhelming sacrifices that generally go hand-in-hand with relentless pursuit of personal achievement.

The personal interlude at “the crossroads” wasn’t characterized by popular ideas about legendary “deals or duels with the devil.”  The time spent at "the crossroads" was merely a humble affirmation of faith in the sublime and sustaining grace that alone can propel the creativity and aspirations of song to transcendental proportions, beyond the heights of greatness, into realms of virtuous simplicity - to profoundly touch the souls of all who may share, and a mockingbird marked the moment by alighting with a tune.

A stop was made to use the internet at the public library in Tupelo, Mississippi.  Across the street from the library was an attractive Episcopal Chapel.  The sanctuary wasn’t locked, and a few minutes were spent there composing a short poem that was left behind - with no copy kept.

The year spent attending Faith Miracle Revival Center still stands the longest duration and most extensive involvement at a single church.  The church was about two blocks from home, in downtown Poteau.  Two Sunday services were generally attended as well as a Wednesday service.   After musical interest and menial talent had been revealed,  involvement as a musician was insisted upon.  Other musicians, especially Sister Pool and teenage grandson Isaac, were always helpful with learning the gospel traditions.  The singers and musicians were also very accepting of the personal preference and notion to play gospel blues.   Isaac was a bass player who loved composing new music, and the two of us spent a substantial amount of time together developing original songs.

Between October 2002 and February 2003, Faith Miracle Revival Center hosted a seventeen-week revival, and services were held six nights a week for the entire duration. During the revival, numerous hours were spent on the platform playing guitar, and vocal skills were gradually being developed.  Oodles of musicians and singers from other charismatic churches in the region participated in the on-going revival.

Involvement at Faith Miracle Revival Center was a totally transformational episode in life and correlated with a poem called Stormbringer written a few months prior to initially visiting the church.

Out of all the many churches visited and attended along the way, Forty Three Assembly of God is by far the favorite.  An immediate and continuous sense of belonging was felt at this church, from the very first visit.  The support and encouragement received were unprecedented, and due to the simple grace and inspirational fellowship always prevailing within the congregation, the essential opportunities to participate in the regularly scheduled singing-events established a secure foundation for comfortable and sincere musical performance.  The faithful acceptance from the many musicians, singers, and listeners encountered at this friendly church will always be remembered and appreciated.  Forty Three Assembly of God is situated on a country hillside above pristine Lee Cree Reservoir - another favorite area that was frequently visited for local hiking and outdoor meditation.

Mission Statement & Program Outline

With Danielle

Lee Creek Reservoir, Arkansas

Fall 2009

Danielle was a precocious and very tenacious young woman who showed an interest in helping develop and promote the Rock-n-Ropes recreational climbing program.

For nearly three years, all available spare-time went into exploration and development to establish a suitable area for effectively teaching rock-climbing and rappelling classes in the Ft. Smith vicinity, and a substantial effort was made to introduce a well designed curriculum for the program.  The structure for the Rock-n-Ropes program was essentially based on concepts for advancement and formal recognition germane to concepts implemented in traditional martial-arts formats.  The ideas incorporated into the general design and mission goals for the Rock-n-Ropes program surely had far-reaching potential.  With all the available outdoor resources in eastern Oklahoma and northwest Arkansas, opportunities for further development of new rock-climbing areas in the region were vast.

Unfortunately, the Rock-n-Ropes program was forestalled, barely off the ground, due to the economic recession of 2008.  The Ft. Smith community was severely impacted by the recession, and maintaining necessary employment became nearly impossible. The invariable decision to relocate to Texas came during the spring of 2010.  Leaving Arkansas was among the most heartbreaking episodes in life.  As anticipated, homesickness for the outdoor environment of the region as well as the down-to-earth music culture permeating the community has left a lingering hollowness.  If the choice was offered for the most desirable location to reside, northwest Arkansas would surely be the place, especially the Fayetteville area...

...guess it’s just too hard to have your cake and eat the blues…

Friskie "Doodle"

About two weeks before the time of relocating to Texas, a kitten (Friskie) showed up in the driveway, out in the rain, meowing at the top of her voice.  She was from a litter of feral kittens living under the house.  About a year earlier, Friskie's mother, while still a small kitten, had taken up residence on the chassis of the pickup-truck and had been riding around town.  The kitten had once been seen next to the truck in the grocery store parking-lot, and then she ran under the truck and mysteriously disappeared.  Ann, the next door neighbor, was aware of the kitten living on the truck and had mentioned this.  However, the idea of a kitten not being too terrified to remain under the loudly running truck was hard to believe, until the kitten was spotted near the truck a second time, in a different parking-lot.

Ann usually fed and looked after the neighborhood cats.  Friskie’s mother turned out to be exceptionally beautiful and lived at Ann’s house.  Before Friskie’s litter was born, two other litters had to be captured and taken to the animal shelter.  Friskie was very cute, and had apparently been slightly tamed by Ann’s family.  Therefore, catching her wasn’t difficult.  She was small enough to walk through the mesh of a chain-link fence, and after passing through the fence, she was immediately accosted by a midsized dog.  Friskie didn’t panic but just bowed up, soaking wet, and hissed at the dog.  Apparently, she had inherited her mother’s boldness.  Friskie appeared to be about a month old at the time.

Our family had always liked cats, and dad needed a new one.  However, he felt that, due to his age and declining health, he wouldn't be around long enough to warrant taking on a new pet.  Fortunately for Friskie, her obvious destiny was to either be taken to Texas for whatever life awaited or be taken to the animal shelter.  The animal shelter seemed like the worst option, so she was adopted as a new pet for dad.  Once taken in and successfully weaned, she naturally fell in love with the guitar.

On the drive to Texas, the clutch linkage on the old truck broke, and we spent the night in a parking lot.  Friskie stayed caged under an upside down laundry basket while the tools were unloaded to rig the linkage well enough to finish the trip.  Both a Walmart and Home Depot were within a few blocks of the truck’s location, so acquiring the necessary materials to rig the linkage was possible.  The trip and transition were quite an experience for Friskie.
